Forty-nine individuals, including voice phishing criminals who fled to the Philippines, have been forcibly repatriated to South Korea.

This is the largest repatriation of fugitives from overseas by a single country.

The National Police Agency announced that 49 suspects (43 men and 6 women) were forcibly repatriated through Incheon International Airport at approximately 4:30 PM on the 3rd.

Due to the large scale of the repatriation, a separate chartered flight was deployed.

Voice phishing and other fraud offenders accounted for the largest number, with 18 individuals. Most of them were based in the Philippines and committed voice phishing and smishing crimes.

Including these individuals, the total number of fraud offenders is 25.

Seventeen individuals were charged with cybercrime, including charges of operating a gambling den; three violent crimes, including one gangster accused of aggravated assault; and one each of embezzlement and violations of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, the Tax Evasion Punishment Act, and the Sexual Violence Punishment Act.

A total of 1,332 citizens were harmed by their criminal activities, resulting in a combined loss of approximately 60.5 billion won.

This large-scale repatriation operation involved approximately 130 personnel, including domestic police officers and medical staff from the National Police Hospital.

Approximately 100 security personnel, including members of the anti-terrorism task force, were deployed at the Incheon International Airport arrival hall.

The repatriation targets were handcuffed and transported in convoys under strict surveillance.

The average time on the run was three years and six months. The longest-serving fugitive, who had been hiding in the Philippines for 16 years after embezzling 20 billion won (approximately $17 million) from corporate funds, was finally apprehended.

The average age was 39, with the oldest being 63 and the youngest 24. Among those repatriated were 11 members of an organized crime group that operated an illegal online gambling site worth approximately 5.3 trillion won (approximately $4.5 billion) since 2018.

Last June, the National Police Agency dispatched Korean police officers to the Philippines, working with local authorities and approximately 30 other officers. They raided local residences and arrested members of the organized crime group.

The mastermind and accomplice in the 2024 robbery and assault case involving Koreans in Cebu, Philippines, have also been repatriated to Korea.

Lee Jun-hyung, Director of International Cooperation at the National Police Agency, stated, "There is no longer any hiding place for criminals seeking refuge overseas. We will continue to pursue and apprehend fugitives overseas."
